5th Grade Update

Parents,

Just a friendly reminder of all the great events happening this week at Soleado…

1.       Sweetheart Dance this Friday night at Ridgecrest from 7-9pm.

a.       If you would like to order a photo wristband that gives your child unlimited access to the photo booth, please CLICK HERE to order. (the photo booth company has offered a huge discount on their packages and this is a great opportunity to raise a great deal of money for our Booster Club).

b.      RUBY’s has created a fundraising opportunity that evening for us as well. If you would like to eat dinner at Ruby’s before the event, they will donate 20% of the proceeds back to our school. Another great way to raise money for Soleado and enjoy dinner before the event!

2.       Macaroni and Cheese week begins on Friday!  The author of the book Macaroni and Cheese, Stacie Turk, will be working with the students on a reader’s/writer’s workshop in their classroom. You can purchase a signed copy of Macaroni and Cheese and she will hand deliver it to your child the day she visits their class. She is also donating a percentage of the sales back to Soleado. Our class will not be participating in the workshops but if you are interested in purchasing a book for a younger sibling or family member here is the info.

3.       Java with Gina will be held this Wednesday, 2/4 at 9:00am in the science lab. I will have the author of Macaroni and Cheese talking about her workshop and her book. Also, I have invited the Behaviorists that are guiding and directing the Anti-Bullying program in second grade to introduce the program. I will be including a conversation about our Parent Math Night and discussing our districts next steps to insure fidelity in our math programs district wide.  
I hope that you all had a nice 3 day weekend. Our teachers worked diligently with 4 publishers to begin the process of selecting a new math program for next year. The day was a success!
Thank you in advance to all of the families that will have the chance to participate in our events this week. We are a great school because of our teachers, our students, and the wonderful support of our parents!

4.      Our classes have been working on an opinion paper about Kids participating in Extreme Sports. We would like to invite you to come listen to them read their papers. We call it an Author’s Celebration. It is beneficial for students to have an authentic audience and we would love your help with that!

5.  VALENTINE'S DAY INFO: You should have received the flyer for Valentine's day festivities. The students will be making mail bags for their Valentine's out of paper grocery bags.  Each student should start bringing in their grocery bags tomorrow.

Hi Everyone - Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to start our last semester at Soleado with our 5th Graders! Can you believe how much time has passed?

Below is a list of dates for the next 3 months to book in your calendars. You will get more information on all of it as the date approaches, but we know that the more notice we get on things, the sooner we can get it on the calendars, and make it.

Before we get to the dates, we do need parent help on a few things: 

1. Science Fair Judges Needed. (judge/organize entries, tally scores, plan Science Fair night)
2. HSA Nominating Committee (request school nominations, tally results, organize awards, plan lunch)
3. PTA Nominating Committee (help to determine next year's PTA Board)

5th grade update

Hi everyone, just a few reminders about the last two weeks of 2014:
 
CLICK HERE to sign up for Teacher Luncheon on Wed. 12/10. We really need your help in showing our teachers how much we appreciate them. The theme is "comfort food" and can be home made or store bought.

Pajama Day is this Friday 12/12 and Winter Gram sales start too.
 
Parent night out is Friday, 12/12. CLICK HERE for more information.

The all school holiday sing is Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 9 am.

Holiday music performance on Thursday 18th in the MPR.  9:00 - 10:00.

 There will also be a small class party on Friday the 19th - no parent help is required.
 

Minimum day on Friday the 19th... dismissal at 12:00.

Thanksgiving Feast Information

Wednesday, the kids will enjoy their Thanksgiving stew. Below is more information about the fun the kids will enjoy as well as opportunities to help out.

We do need help with chopping the veggies tomorrow after lunch.  We can set up the chopping tables at lunch and then be ready to chop when the kids get back.  I am hoping to show a movie during the chopping to help keep it calm.  :)


For Wednesday, we will set up and start putting the stew in the bowls during recess. (10:45)  That way they can cool off before we serve them.  We will also need help with clean-up 11:45-12:00 ish.

PILGRIM STEW

Peel and cut 10 potatoes

Peel and cut 12 carrots into ½ inch pieces

Cut 2 onions in chunks

Cut 6 celery stalks into ½ inch pieces

Pour in the tomatoes

Pour in the tapioca

Add salt, pepper, and bay leaf

Mix – cook on high for 10 hours or low for 20 hours

Black & White Masquerade Ball

Parents,
Our big event, the Black and White Masquerade Ball, is quickly approaching and we are seeking your support! This is a special event, as it is a time for us to get together and celebrate as a school community to support our magnificent school. The money raised for this event will fund the Palos Verdes Conservatory Arts Program coming to your Soleado children this Spring. Please reserve your seat for the evening of November 21st!
